Second Worse for Wear gig
Published on 26th July 2007 in Ents
With the second Worse for Wear gig at The Vikings Hotel fast approaching, and other local bands gigging in the area, people are coming to expect a very high standard in Goole - and live music fans have not been left disappointed.
Playing the venue on Thursday, August 2 are Afterglow, who were born in January, 2006 when Boba (drums), Ben (bass), Rucko (lead guitar/vocals), Will (lead vocals) and Joe stepped into a rehearsal studio on Hedon Road, Hull.
Seven days later the band played their first gig at the Bell and Crown in Snaith and a month after forming Afterglow they recorded their first demo. The band soon found themselves travelling up and down the country in their ex-police riot van, playing an almost-constant nationwide gig schedule, performing for the likes of Carling, HMV, XFM and Kerrang.
In the months that followed, a rehearsal room ban, a second studio demo and a police escort out of Chorley all occurred! A year on and Afterglow are set to release their debut EP 'A Night in the Life of...' The band's debut offering features 'City of Sin', 'Welly', 'Heritage', 'Electric Eyes' and 'Sick of Second Chances'. Described by the band as "five tracks that sum up the last year for us", the EP will be released on CD, limited edition 7-inch vinyl and will be available for download from iTunes.
The band's follow-up single is set to hit the shelves in August. Also making an appearance at the next Worse for Wear gig will be The Picks, a band from Leicester, five cheeky rascals with a love of music.
They began in November, 2005 playing covers before moving onto their own material. The band managed to get a slot on the nokia unsigned bands stage at Reading Festival 2006. From then they have gone on to play with The Displacements and The Pigeon Detectives and, more recently, The Paddingtons and up and coming band Reverend.
They describe their music as "a modern blend of different styles." Tickets for Worse for Wear on August 2 are available from The Goole Times office, The Vikings and by calling 07809202964 and are £5 in advance or £6 on the door.
To keep the masses entertained until then, The Morning Fix performed at the North Eastern on Saturday, along with Polystyrene Planes, two Goole-based bands drumming up a fan-base for themselves. The Morning Fix, made up of Mark Eyre, lead vocals and guitarist; Aaron Jones on guitars; James Smethurst on drums and Lynsey Eyre (temporary) bassist are impressed by the wide variety of bands in Goole.
Mark said: "I think Goole has a wide range of musical acts. With all the up and coming talent I figured this was the perfect time to join the circle and last Saturday was a great start to what I hope will be a promising future for the band. We all had a superb time and if you have that you are halfway there!"
The Morning Fix, who list Nick Cave, The Triffids, John Petrucci and Warren Ellis as their inspirations, plan to continue gigging at the North Eastern and supporting friends across the country. However, they do require a bassist and anyone interested in joining them should visit www.myspace.com/themorningfix.
