Bittersweet comedy
Global warming, growing older and bowls.
You could think that these three topics have anything in common but you would be wrong as they are all features of a bittersweet comedy that is coming to Hull Truck Theatre on May 31 and runs until June 23.
Crown Prince, written and directed by John Godber, looks at the life of Jack Batley, 'Crown Prince' and groundsman at the Beech Hill Bowling Club. He is there day-in-day-out, ready to defend his title against arch rival Ronnie Carlton. In fact, Jack's life centres around bowling and his pals Ted and Caroline. But everything changes for the gang at Beech Hill when Jack's granddaughter Fay King arrives on a mission to save the planet.
"This is a bittersweet comedy that looks at issues in the world around us, including ageing concerns, global warming and other worries that have caught up with us," says actress Sarah Parks, who plays GP Caroline, one of Jack Batley's best pals. Sarah admitted that she will have bags of fun playing GP Caroline, a resilient older woman, surrounded by a gaggle of male bowling fanatics.
"Caroline is a single, ageing woman who is totally self-sufficient," she said.
We have one pair of tickets to give away to see Crown Prince at Hull Truck Theatre on Wednesday, June 6, beginning at 8pm.
