Saturday, May 26 sees Howden Live's continuing blues roots season at the Shire Hall, with a rare opportunity to see Little Toby Walker, who comes direct from the USA.

Unique finger-style guitarist

Little Toby Walker is a unique, accomplished finger-style guitar virtuoso who is adept at blues, rags, hot country picking and coaxes more out of a guitar than anyone can imagine.

Toby's originality doesn't end there - he is also a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from both traditional and contemporary music.

Toby's unique style has been eagerly received in various venues including concert halls, festivals and coffeehouses throughout the US, England and Europe.

Passion for music

Toby's passion for blues, rag, folk and other traditional American music drove him to leave an apartment crammed full of recordings, books and instruments for the Mississippi Delta, Virginia and the Carolinas where he tracked down some of the more obscure - but immensely talented - music makers of an earlier era.

He learned directly at the feet of Eugene Powell, James 'Son' Thomas, Etta Baker and R.L Burnside, among others.

The talent, passion and soul of a Toby Walker performance reflects these travels.

Humorous and heartwarming tales

Whether it's telling the humorous and heartwarming tales of other masters, talking about his inspirations or astounding you with his mastery, his performances are a feast for the senses.

Toby's audiences are moved in ways that delight them long after the encores.

Tickets are available from Touchwood Homecare, 2 Market Place, Howden, 01430 431535 and DT's Rockshop, Pasture Road, Goole 01405 767282.

Just in case you'd forgotten...

This weekend is the weekend of Hear and Now, a celebration of all things jazz.

Running from tomorrow (Friday May 18) to Sunday evening (May 20) at the Shire Hall, the festival includes performances from some of the most talented jazz players and singers around.

Workshops

Plus, there's the chance to try out your own jazz skills and take part in two workshops.

Beginners are invited to go along on Saturday morning, between 10am and 12.30pm, and those with some experience and go to a session on Sunday morning between the same times.

Liane Carroll, Jenny Smith, Ian Shaw, Anita Wardell and Tina May will all be performing over the weekend.
