Howden Live's spring season gets off to a fresh start this weekend with a band inspired by the music of America's juke joints.

The Spikedrivers, whose members hail from South Carolina, California and Belfast, make a welcome and much requested third visit to the Shire Hall this Saturday (April 14).

Inspired by their American roots and the country's rich musicalheritage, the Spikedrivers' songwriting, vocal harmonies and unique instrumentation give them a fresh and exciting sound.

The atmosphere created by the band takes you on a journey, from southernjuke joints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance.

On guitar, vocals and harmonica is Ben Tyzack, who grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. It was there that he picked up his passion for the blues and once he heard the likes of Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Doc Watson from his father's record collection, the decision to play guitar was an easy one.

After years playing in bands and honing his fingerpicking and slide playing, Ben decided to start a project based around his love for early blues. He formed the Spikedrivers in 1992 and continues to develop the band's sound and his song writing. Ben has also performed with Lee Sankey, Ian Siegal and recently with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Now in London but originally from California, Constance Redgrave learned her craft at the Music Institute of Technology in Los Angeles. Her obvious talent landed her the gig with 'Christian Death' who were just about to leave for a European tour. Since then, she has played with Otis Grand, Steve Cropper, Anson Funderburgh, Hank Wangford, Chris Jagger, Pierre La Rue, Wes McGhee,Companions of the Rosy Hours, Boo Hewerdine and The Colin John Band, among others.Maurice McElroy, from Belfast, is on drums, vocals and percussion and is described as a "veteran blues drummer" by Blueprint Magazine. Nicknamed 'The Groove Meister' by the Earl Green Band and his credits include Otis Grand, Larry Garner, Philip Walker, Robert Ward, Guitar Shorty, Wes McGhee, Kimmie Rhodes, Lee Sankey, The Colin John Band, and, of course The Earl Green Band. Tickets to see The Spikedivers are £8 and are available from Touchwood Homecare, 2 Market Place, Howden, East Yorkshire, DN14 7BJ on 01430 431535 (between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday and also at DT's Rockshop, 59 Pasture Road, Goole, 01405 767282. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8pm start. Alternatively, buy them from Dig Yorkshire via www.howden-live.com and check out other events from Howden Live's spring season.

.....and next week

The New Rope String Band, whose repertoire includes hoe-down, pan-celtic music come to the Shire Hall on Friday (April 20), and the exhilarating Alan Barnes and Bruce Adams quintet the following evening.

The Old Rope String Band (what is left of them: Pete Challoner and TimDalling) have joined forces with two amazing musicians (Jock Tyldesley and Vera van Heeringen), (below 12-04-57 SU) and as a four piece they are taking off from where the Old Ropes sadly stopped. They play a big assortment of things and all sorts of hoedown pan-celtic,old-timey, up-beat down-home music.

All this is combined with bizarre physical nonsense and clowning about. And singing. And dancing. The sheer visualosity and laughableness of the New Rope String Band will bring pleasure to absolutely almost everyone. Boundless energy, exuberant spectacles and beautiful music executed with kindness. What could possibly go wrong?

On Saturday (April 21), clarinetist/saxophonist, Alan Barnes joins forces with trumpet/flugel player Bruce Adams.

The all star quintet will also include extraordinary Belgian pianist/saxophonist, Pasquale Mischaux, Alec Dankworth on bass and Bobby Worth on drums. Popular favourites Alan and Bruce always create a brilliant partnership whenever they perform together and with such a star-studded accompanying group this particular concert should be especially sensational.

Tickets for the New Rope String Band are £8, and for Alan and Bruce, £10, available from the address above.
